Session 11 Review
“Dale Carnegie said, “The market is often glutted with technical ability. But the person who has technical knowledge plus the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership and to arouse enthusiasm in others, that person is headed for higher earning power.” He wasn’t just talking about earning money; he was also talking about earning respect, opportunities, and much more. Last session you showed us a glimpse of your true capacity to excel and achieve higher earning power.”

Session 11A Highlights: Be a Human Relations Champion
Issues Addressed
- What difference do changes in my behaviour have on the behaviours and attitudes of others?
- How can I move to the next level and beyond using Dale Carnegie’s Human Relations Principles?

Session 11B Highlights: Inspire Others
Issues Addressed
- Does emotion have a place at work?
- How can we be more persuasive and inspiring to others and ourselves?

Session 12 Preview
Session 12 is a commencement, not a graduation. Our accomplishments and achievements are indeed worthy of recognition. More importantly, our results over the last 12 sessions are the building blocks for creating an even better skill set for the future. In this session we recognize our breakthroughs resulting from this program. We will then inspire and motivate others by communicating our new, improved vision for the future and commit to continuous improvement

In preparation for Session 12, please:
1) Prepare a two-minute report on an incident that communicates your major benefit from this program. Bring Evidence of your breakthrough to support your use of the Magic Formula. Read page 12.4 of your Participant Manual and complete the Celebrate Achievements Report Planning Sheet on page 12.5.

2) Prepare a one-minute report on your vision 3-6 months beyond this training. Communicate specifically what is happening and what has changed (as if it is taking place right now). Complete the “Renew Our Vision Report Planning Sheet” on pages 12.6.

3) Come prepared to discuss examples of how you are applying the Dale Carnegie concepts (like your use of the Dale Carnegie’s Human Relations Principles or communicating with inspiration).

4) Be prepared to tell us what particular part of the readings listed below had an effect on you and why.

Reading Recommendations
- Dale Carnegie’s books are valuable resources for a lifetime of continuous improvement. Make a commitment to read them at least once per year. Also, carry the Golden Book with you and refer to it often.

Time Management

What did people do with their metaphorical marbles this week?

We would love to hear your thoughts!!

Desiderata

Desiderata - by max ehrmann

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Experts tell us that it takes about four weeks to change a habit. By now, we’ve had the chance to change and solidify our people skills and communications habits several times over. We are becoming unconsciously competent at higher levels than many of us thought possible just 10 sessions ago.

In preparation for Session 11, please:
1) For Session 11A, prepare a two-minute report on your application of any of the Human Relations principles during the course. This presentation is the cumulative product of all of your efforts to win friends and influence people. It should not be a repeat of a previously given report. Use the Magic Formula. Read pages 11.4-11.8 in your Participant Manual and complete the “Be a Human Relations Champion Report Planning Sheet” on page 11.9.

2) For Session 11B, prepare a two-minute report on a specific incident that had an emotional and powerful impact on you. Use this experience to inspire the group. Tell us what impact the experience had on your life. Speak from the depth of your heart with feeling and conviction. Remember this is a magic formula report, so please think of a specific incident to convey your report. This is an opportunity to use all of the skills you have gained to communicate a message of importance. Read page 11.14 of your Participant Manual and complete the “Inspire Others Report Planning Sheet” on page 11.15.

3) Come prepared to discuss examples of how you are applying the Dale Carnegie concepts (like using cushions, stating your opinions with evidence, or your use of the managing worry principles).

Session 9 Review
“Oliver Wendell Homes once said, “Man’s mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions.” We certainly expanded our capabilities and understanding of what we can truly accomplish in the last session!”

Session 9A Highlights: Demonstrate Leadership
Issues Addressed
- What is required of us to apply the “Be a Leader” Human Relations Principles when working with challenging people?
- What principles do we need to continue to work on and what might be the long-term outcome?

Session 9B Highlights: Develop More Flexibility

Issues Addressed
- How can I use flexibility to better communicate with others?
- What specific skills will help my communications be received with greater appreciation and respect?

What We Discovered
We each have a comfort zone when communicating. Our listeners also have their own comfort zones. Ultimately our listeners judge us on what we do, how we look, what we say, and how we say it. If we don’t become more flexible in our communication style, our listeners may not get the messages we are trying to communicate, no matter how valid and important our messages are. Being flexible is, therefore, up to us and is more important than being comfortable.

In preparation for Session 10, please:

1) Briefly review pages 10.4-10.6 of your Participant Manual. No further preparation is required for this part of the session.

2) For Session 10B, prepare a 2-minute report on how you have applied the Manage Stress Principles since Session 4. Use the Magic Formula. Read page 10.10 in your Participant Manual and complete the “Manage Our Stress Report Planning Sheet” on page 10.11.

3) Observe and reflect on your increasing skills in using Dale Carnegie’s 30 Human Relations Principles. We will give our Human Relations Champion status reports in Session 11.

4) Come prepared to discuss examples of how you are applying the Dale Carnegie concepts (like flexibility and your use of Dale Carnegie’s Human Relations and Stress and Worry Control principles).

5) Be prepared to tell us what particular part of the readings listed below had an effect on you and why.

Reading Recommendations
- How to Win Friends and Influence People, Review Part Two

Warren Buffet Interview

Warren Buffet speaks about how nervous he was when he first took the Dale Carnegie Course.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONDxvkTyndw

This reminds me of the phrase "every master was once a disaster"

Wednesday, 3 June 2009

IF by Rudyard Kipling

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

“Nothing else so inspires and heartens people as words of appreciation. You and I may soon forget the words of encouragement and appreciation that we utter now, but the person to whom we have spoken them may treasure them and repeat them to themselves over a lifetime.”
–Dale Carnegie

Session 7 Review
Peter Drucker once commented that our organizations don’t need more managers, they need better leaders. I wish he could have been here last week to see how well we are developing our leadership skills!”. In Session 7, we personally validated the relevance of Dale Carnegie’s time-tested approaches to influencing people through: trust and respect; achieving cooperation versus compliance; and discovering the power of finding points of agreement. Based on intentional actions, we saw example after example of how Dale Carnegie’s second set of Human Relations Principles can generate increased collaboration and cooperation.

Session 7A Highlights: Gain the Willing Cooperation of Others
Issues Addressed
- How can I create an environment where people are committed to results, not just compliant to orders?
- What is the synergy between the first set of Dale Carnegie’s Human Relations Principles and the second set??

Session 7B Highlights: Commit to Influence Others
Issues Addressed
- How can we help change the attitudes of others without giving offence or arousing resentment?
- What role must Dale Carnegie’s first two set of Human Relations Principles play if we are to become change agents rather than victims of change?

In preparation for Session 7, please:
1) Read pages 8.4-8.5 of your Participant Manual. There is no further preparation required for Part A.

2) Read page 8.10-8.11 of your Participant Manual. Prepare a two-minute Magic Formula report on the results of your commitment from Session 3 to “Put Enthusiasm to Work.” Complete the “Realizing the Power of Enthusiasm Report Planning Sheet” on 8.12.

3) Come prepared to discuss examples of how you are applying the Dale Carnegie concepts (like the third set of Human Relations Principles).

4) Be prepared to tell us what particular part of the readings listed below had an effect on you and why.

Reading Recommendations
- How to Win Friends and Influence People, Part Four, Chapters 6-9 and A Shortcut to Distinction

The Power of Intention

Yesterday I went to the "start-up" business event at Excel.

Before the event, I consciously made a decision to bring home a minimum of 15 business cards. Having a specific goal in mind caused me to take certain ACTIONS before the event and during the event.
Firstly I drew a mind map to brainstorm ways I could achieve my goal:
- Event organisers
- Stand holders
- Referrals from stand holders (decision makers)
- People attending seminars
- Misc

When I had completed my mind map, I then reviewed the venue layout in the event booklet and ticked the key people I wanted to definately see. I then got into action!

The afternoon turned out to be quite enjoyable, as it was almost like conducting a treasure hunt. Having and intentional goal caused me to ask certain questions as well:
"How have you found the event?"
"How often are the events run?"
"Who typically attends these events?"
"If I was to take stand how much would it cost and what other promotion would I get?"
"Who are you looking to attract and why?"
"Who makes the decisions for purchasing in your business?"
"Which other events do you attend?"
"What challenges do you face at events like these?"
"What challenges do you face in your business?"

And so on and so on...

All of the above questions meant that I could gather information either for an immediate pitch or for a later meeting or phone conversation. You do of course need to listen to their pitch as well and might need to take notes.

Many of us will call meetings or go along to events and have no end result in mind. I met my target of 15 cards. If I had set my minimum target higher I wonder if I would have achieved even more.

Letting Go!

After 5 days on the west coast of Portugal with good food, good company and surfing, I realised something quite powerful.

In the lead up to the trip I found myself getting wound up! I had placed a series of calls that had not been returned, emails that other people had not responded to and a number of documents that had to be re-written. As a result, I got more and more frustrated with people in general and one of those people was me.

So, I decided to complete the final actions before I went away. i also decided that whilst I was away, I would completely immerse myself in the moment and enjoy it fully. Even when I wiped out on my surf board and hit my head, I thought to myself "wow...I hit my head in Portugal and I am still able to lift a Sagres beer".

On my return, I found that the emails had been answered and my phone calls returned and the unnecessary stress had left my body.

This made me realise that sometimes I need to take ACTIONS and then let go of the outcome. This allows other people to step into the space and it certainly made me a happier person.

So...

Take action
The results will come

Congratulations Session 4 Award Recipients
- Merijn Backx of Shell - Human Relations Award
- Corina Balaneanu of Dale Carnegie - Human Relations Award

SESSION 4 REVIEW
“In this session we began to reap the benefits of leading an intentional life. We changed our approaches to people by avoiding the natural inclination to criticize, condemn, and complain. Instead we made people feel important, became genuinely interested in others, and talked in terms of other people’s interests. As a result, our self confidence increased, stressful relationships become more productive, and our perception of what is possible expanded.”

Session 4A Highlights: Put Stress in Perspective
Issues Addressed
- What is the true cost of unmanaged stress and worry to us and our organizations?
- What can we do to manage stress; which not only kills people, but kills what is inside them while they are still alive?

Session 4B Highlights: Motivate Others and Enhance Relationships
Issues Addressed
- Why are foundational human relations principles so challenging to apply consistently?
- Can applying the Human Relations Principles truly enhance profitability, productivity, and quality?

SESSION 5 PREVIEW
Most of us have a desire to be recognized as a “can do” person within our respective organizations. We know that this does not happen by being a “wall-flower” or a “low-key” associate. Expect an industrial strength dose of increased effectiveness and confidence as a result of attending this session!

In preparation for Session 5, please:
1) Prepare a 1-minute report on an experience that involved a lot of action. Be animated by reliving an experience just as it happened. Show us the story of what happened. Read pages 5.5-5.6 in your Participant Manual and complete the “Energize Our Communications Report Planning Sheet on page 5.7.

2) Become familiar with “The Box Factory” on page 5.4 by reading it several times.

Session 3B Highlights: Recognize Achievements

- How can we best face change, challenges, and opportunity?

SESSION 4 Preview
If you work in stressful situations with stressful people, this session is for you! Our team members may view us as role models. They most certainly learn from and are affected by the examples we set when it comes to attitude control and stress management. Therefore, it is important for us to lessen daily "dis-stress" factors in order to lead most effectively. Inevitably, part of our stress is directly related to people with whom we work. Dale Carnegie has recipes for dealing with both stressful situations and people, so bring an open mind and be on time.

In preparation for Session 4, please:
1) Prepare a 1-minute Commitment Report on an area of your professional life that is causing a disproportionate amount of stress (distress). Consider these questions: "What about this situation is causing stress?" "How can I better handle the stress?" "What impact will this have on achieving my vision?"

Read pages 4.4-4.8 in your Participant Manuals. Complete the "Commitment to Put Stress in Perspective" form on page 4.9 to help prepare your report.

2) Prepare a 2-minute Status Report about an experience that illustrates your intentional application of the Enhance Relationships Principles. This is a commitment we made in Session 2. Use the Magic Formula process to structure the report: Incident, Action, and Benefit. Read pages 4.14-4.21 of your Participant Manual and complete the "Motivate Others ad Enhance Relationships Report Planning Sheet on page 4.22 to prepare your report. Practice it too!

3) Come prepared to discuss examples of how you are applying Dale Carnegie’s concepts and processes from sessions 1-3 (such as the Remembering Names, Put Enthusiasm to Work, etc.).

4) Be prepared to tell us what particular part of the readings listed below had an effect on you and why.
